While polling data leading up to Ireland’s General Election on Saturday February 8th indicated a strong showing by Sinn Fein (SF), the initial results where they have topped the public vote in terms of first preferences has come as a major surprise. Counting resumes today, but the near 100-year historical dominance of the two ‘mainstream’ parties, Fianna Fail (FF) & Fine Gael (FG) is looking increasingly threatened, as their combined total votes have slumped to the lowest in the history of the state.
